Transform Your Career with Heavy Equipment Training
Heavy equipment operators play a crucial role in the construction and maintenance of essential infrastructure, including roads, bridges, airports, pipelines, tunnels, and buildings. They are also involved in surface mining, quarrying activities, and material handling. If you’re interested in pursuing a career in this field, the Heavy Equipment Operators Program at Operating Engineers College (OEC) offers a comprehensive path to becoming a skilled professional.
Program Overview
Our pre-employment apprenticeship program is accredited by the Provincial Apprenticeship and Certification Board (PACB) and is designed for individuals aspiring to work as heavy equipment operators. This rigorous program equips participants with the practical skills and theoretical knowledge necessary to excel in the industry.
Upon successful completion of the program, graduates will be qualified for entry-level heavy equipment operator positions. The curriculum is structured to ensure that students gain hands-on experience operating three different types of heavy equipment. This practical training is complemented by instruction on safety protocols, operational techniques, and equipment maintenance.
Certification and Licensing
Graduates of the Heavy Equipment Operators Program will earn several important credentials:
Journeyperson Certification: Provides the opportunity to advance in the field.
Class 3 Driver’s License: Includes the Air Brakes endorsement (09), essential for operating heavy vehicles.
Class 8 Traction Engine License: Certification for operating specific types of heavy machinery.
Equipment and Trade Designation: The program covers training on three types of heavy equipment. In Newfoundland and Labrador, the Heavy Equipment Operator profession encompasses seven types of equipment, with three designated as Red Seal trades and four as provincial-only trades. This designation highlights the significance and specialization of different equipment within the industry.
